As you know, this past year has been one of the best in the history of Steep Theatre Company. We’ve earned acclaim from the critics and recognition from the Chicago theater community, and we’ve just made a major investment in the company’s future by entering into a five-year lease on a new home for Steep. But we have just had news that may top all of our successes this year.
Steep Theatre Company has the opportunity to receive a 3-to-1 match from the city of Chicago on all the expenditures we make building and renovating our new space.
We need $140,000 to turn our new space into a working theater, and this grant means that we can meet our goal if we raise just $35,000. The city will give us a grant for the rest.
To take advantage of this city program, however, we need your help. Now more than ever we are asking for your support to help us reach our goal.
$140,000 is a big number, but we need every cent. We are thrilled to say that our new space at 1115 West Berwyn Avenue on the north side of Chicago is much bigger than the storefront we have called home for the last five years, which will enable us to increase space for seating, to make room for a business office and for more storage space, and to create what we hope will be a more comfortable and welcoming lobby for our audience.
However, Steep's new space is basically an empty shell, and it will take a lot of work and a lot of money to get it up and running. And when we say empty, we mean empty. Here are just a few of the tasks we have to undertake before we can produce a show at our new theater:
- Buying a new furnace and air-conditioning system
- Rewiring the building to handle the demands of a professional theater
- Installing at least two handicapped-accessible bathrooms, and ideally three
- Making the structural changes necessary to build a stage and tiered seating, to partition the space, and to allow for other necessities, possibly including raising and reinforcing the ceiling to make more room for our lighting grid
Steep is a 501(c)(3) organization, and all donations are tax-deductible. Your contribution is crucial to our effort to raise the $35,000 we need now to fully benefit from the city's gift. If we can invest $140,000 in our new home's infrastructure, we will be able to build a space that reflects the quality and professionalism that Steep's members have brought to our productions over the last five years, and that will allow us to grow in the years to come.
