Steep Theatre Company was founded in December of 2000 by a group of artists who had little more in common than a desire to work in an open, ensemble atmosphere and to produce an intense and immersing theatrical experience. Armed with a script and a shoestring budget, we produced our first show in March of 2001. The production was by all accounts a success. Encouraged by this success and fortified by the confidence this first show gave us, we decided we might give this theater company thing a run.
In short order, our sights shifted from stringing together a couple of shows towards becoming an important, contributing fixture in the Chicago theatrical community and a theater known as a home for innovative, ensemble work. We realized that we had an idea and a voice that were not only important, but to which people responded. We were a company of regular, everyday people who just happened to have a love for theater and enjoyed working together. We found that the stories we responded to were stories that all people can respond to, whether they were theater lovers or not. Once we understood that and embraced it, our mission became clear.
Steep Theatre is a company of artists who explore ensemble-based "Everyperson" theater. Our mission is to bring out the everyday truths in the stories we tell through ensemble work. We reach out to non-traditional theater goers by seeking out stories and creating experiences relevant to them. We find works that showcase and broaden our ensemble's talents and our ensemble style. Today, the company is comprised of ten members and each production is chosen by these members.
Steep Theatre Company has grown by leaps and bounds over the last five years. Since our founding, we have produced 20 shows which have been met with remarkable critical and commercial success. Spurred on by our success and achievements, we opened our own storefront theater in the Wrigleyville neighborhood of Chicago in May of 2003. In an incredibly short period of time, just 3 years, we evolved from one of the many hundreds of young, itinerant theater companies whose existence was tenuous at best, to a company that Jonathan Abarbanel, critic for The Windy City Times and WBEZ, says "exemplifies the risk-taking and surprise that the best of off-loop theater continues to offer."
