Greensboro - A Requiem
Greensboro - A Requiem

Greensboro - A Requiem

Written by Emily Mann
Directed by Brad Akin

"Something happened in
Greensboro, North Carolina
I think you should know about."

On November 3rd, 1979, five people were killed and eight more injured when members of the Ku Klux Klan and the self-proclaimed American Nazis stormed an anti-Klan rally in Greensboro, North Carolina. The event received scant media attention as the next day 66 Americans were taken hostage in Iran and held for 444 days. The Tony Award Winning Emily Mann is at her docu-drama best, bringing the tragedy the attention and coverage it lacked 28 years ago.

The script is based on courtroom transcripts, newspaper articles and interviews with survivors creating an ambitious and riveting theatrical event that Mann describes as "eerily present" for our own time. Steep’s large-ensemble, multimedia production is its most ambitious technical production to date and will be directed by ensemble member Brad Akin, who directed the Jeff Nominated Book of Days and Jeff Recommended The Last Days of Judas Iscariot.

Critics:

Jeff Recommended!
- The Joseph Jefferson Awards Committee

"Four Stars...The playwright makes a compelling case for the complicity of Greensboro police and the local FBI, but her best work is in laying out the human complexities and regrets....Akin's fluid, minimalist staging allows the ensemble to shine."
- Kris Vire, TimeOut Chicago

"Highly Recommended...a threnody of sorrow, rage, and regret runs through the script, and Akin's cast captures this still-overlooked dark chapter with grace and power."
- Kerry Reid, Chicago Reader
