About Steep Theatre

Egan Reich

I became a Steep ensemble member in early 2008, right around the time I started scaling back the old acting career, but it's a comfort to know that I do have a place to come back to, whenever I get that urge to come back.

It's been a wonderful experience writing Seven Days for this ensemble. Last year, Pine Box produced my play The Most Liquid Currency in the World. General Desdemona was produced in Edinburgh in 2004, by Hooverville Productions (a company I founded in New York), and by Proctor's Theatre in Schenectady this April. This winter, I wrote In the Morning, There Had Been Hymns - a play about whalers' widows butchering a beached whale.

I also wrote the screenplay Save the Date with the graphic novelist Jeffrey Brown, which will be shot in Chicago next year, as well as a screenplay called Hammond.

I live in Ann Arbor now, pursuing my master's at the Gerald Ford School of Public Policy, but I think - to paraphrase Patti Smith - in heart I am a Chicago artist, and I thank Steep very much for giving me justification to say that.
